28th April 2017

Welcome back to the summer term. As you know, this term is our busiest in school with lots of dates and events so please keep checking your newsletters or the calendar on the website. We have received confirmation that the school will be closed on Thursday 8th June for the General Election but it is a great opportunity that week to elect our school councillors and learn all about our democracy. Please chat to your children about the election if they ask any questions as we talk about it lots in school too. There are some other important dates in the newsletter including dates that we break up and return to school.

We have had some really near misses with parking outside of school recently. You may have noticed that we have called a parking attendant to help keep our children safe. He has issued 12 tickets this week. We urge you to help keep us all by safe by parking carefully or, even better, walking to school.

Finally, we are really lucky to been selected to attend the World Para Athletics championships at the Olympic Park on Monday 17th July. Years 1-6 are all going so it should be a great day!

Attendance

We have been talking to you a lot about attendance because we believe that if children are at school as much as possible, they will make better progress and have better relationships with their friends. This is recognised in lots of research.  The government's national standard for attendance is 96% which means that all schools where attendance is below that level are at risk of a change of their OFSTED rating.

Last year, our attendance was 95.9%, which although improved, is not at the government's standard. This year our attendance remains at 95.9%. I understand that when are children are ill, they need to off school and it is important that illnesses don't spread. However, I would encourage you to look carefully at the term dates to make sure children attend school up to the last day and return back to school on time. I know it is tempting but these days are important, not least because they have opportunities to meet their new teacher and get used to the arrangements for their new classes.

Last day of term for Nursery: Friday 14th July

Last day of term for Reception - Year 6: Wednesday 19th July

Volunteers

We are lucky to have a group of volunteers who read with children regularly in school and we are very grateful for this. I recognise that not everyone can commit to a regular time each week but would still like to help in some way.

If you would like to help out on a one-off basis, there are some events coming up where we need your help:

Science Week 5th - 9th June - If you work in the Science industry, you could speak to some older children about the Science industry or can do a demonstration or experiment with the children.

Please contact Ms Dean

Year 6 Enterprise - Year 6 children are setting up a small "business" to raise money for an event. If you work in that industry, you could help them formulate their plans or speak to them about something to help them plan their project.

Please contact: Mr Omisore

International Day 30th June - On this day, we want to celebrate the different identities in our school and we are looking for anyone who can share something connected to their identity. This could be a musical instrument, story-telling, dancing or even cooking traditional dishes.

Please contact: Ms Tariq

Expressive Arts Week 3rd - 7th July  - During this week, all the children take part in art, drama, dance and poetry activities. If you have a hidden creative talent, we need you!

Please contact: Ms Rorke

Library - We have had our library redesigned and are looking for help to decorate the space. If you are able to help with any illustrations or art-work, that would really help.

Please contract: Ms Bazuaye

If you send an email to the school office school@gwynjones.waltham.sch.uk , we will forward it to the right people.

Peer mentors and School Council

At lunchtime, several children volunteer to help other children in school by setting up games and including any children that feel a bit left out. Ms Campbell would like to say a big well done to Amy in Year 6 and Syrian in Year 4 because other children have said how dedicated and helpful they are. We are very proud of you!

Our school council has recently held a survey all about lunchtimes and the playground. Children really like the water fountains (thanks PTSA) but don't like it when children have arguments. Over the next term, we will work with the school council to implement many of the suggestions.

Uniform

As you know, with your help we picked a new logo for the school as part of our 40th year celebrations. Uniform with the new logo are available here.

Don't worry if you have uniform with the old logo: you will be able to continue using them until you are ready to buy new shirts or jumpers.

Disco

The PTSA is holding the Spring Disco on Friday 19th May and this year it is emoji-themed! smiley

It is being held from 4:30pm-6:00pm and tickets are £1 or £3 with a VIP party bag. If you would like to help, volunteer slips will be sent home shortly.

..and finally

Spuds

The potatoes are growing brilliantly!  Which year group will win the competition?
