8th September 2017

Welcome back to our new school year. I hope you have had a restful summer. We are all so happy to see you again and would like to give a warm welcome to all the new children in Reception and Nursery too.

We have had a busy week this week with the children completing their class charters. This year as a school we are working towards our Level 1 UNICEF Rights Respecting Award. We are taking part in this because we feel very strongly that children should feel safe, nurtured and empowered to make decisions about their future and the future of their community. It involves teaching children about the UN Childrens' Charter and teaching them about the lives of children around the world in different contexts.

We aim for it to: provide children with confidence forming their own opinions about local and global issues; empower children to celebrate and champion diversity; teach children how to respect everyone's rights; and understand their responsibility to protect them. We hope you can chat to your child about their class charter and their rights.

The school was also awarded Healthy Schools Gold Award for all the hard work we do teaching children how to keep safe and healthy. There are only three schools in Waltham Forest to have gold so we are really proud!

Parentmail / PMX

We continue to use PMX (via the Parent Mail app) to make all payments in school including school dinners. For those of you who are new to the app, here is how it works:

* you will be sent a text and email with a link to a log on.

* click on the heading 'payment items' and then shop.

* it will then tell you your balance. Every day your child has a lunch, it will go to a minus or it will be deducted from the balance.

If you have any problems, or you think your child might be eligible for free school meals, please come into the school office.

Our website contains of information about the curriculum in your child's new class. The curriculum map, which shows all the topics in all the different subject areas, can be found here . For English and Maths, detail about the objectives and content that will be covered can be found here too. This is particularly useful if you want to do extra work with your child and want to know what they are doing in class. Each year group also has a curriculum newsletter which goes into more detail about the topics and ways you can help. These can be found below (and also on the year group webpages).

There were some big improvements in attendance last year and we want to keep that up so that all the children get the most learning they can. Obviously some illness is unavoidable and we want to prevent other children from getting ill too. However there are some things you can do to help improve your child's attendance:

*If they have a medical appointment, please bring them in before and try and arrange them for after 1:30pm, if possible.

*Always contact the school if your child is absent. Leave a message or use PMX. If we don't hear from you for longer than 2 days, we will do a home visit.

*Look at the term dates before booking holidays. They are all on the school website and if you leave early to go on holiday you may be fined and, more importantly, your child misses all the great things that happen at the end of term, like the Christmas plays.

Buildings and Grounds

Lots of exciting things happened around school over the holidays!  Amongst other things, all of the toilets from Reception to Year 4 have been completely refurbished and the classrooms decorated.

Thanks to the PTSA, we have a lovely new climbing wall.

A friendly reminder that the children's safety is all of our responsibility on the roads outside school. If you do drive to school, please park responsibly. This means not on the corner or by dropped kerbs and definitely not by the school crossing. If you park illegally you are putting our children's lives at risk.
