International Day - Friday 30th June 2017

As part of our journey to become a Rights Respecting School, all the children at Gwyn Jones have had the opportunity to learn about people from different parts of the world. This will enhance their understanding about becoming a global citizen.  Throughout the International week, the children will be learning songs, poems, stories and various other forms of media linked to a specific country for their year group.

Now here comes the fun part - food of course! On International Day, we would be really grateful if you could bring in one dish that is representative of your culture. Please make sure that the dish does not need refrigerating or heating. Some examples of food that can be brought to school are: samosas, plantain, rice and pasta. In addition, please can you bring the dish to school in a disposable dish/tray. In order for the day to be a real success, it is important for you to label whether the food provided is halal, kosher or vegetarian.

Children are invited to dress up in their national dress or an outfit that best represents them. Parents are invited to stay for the International Costume Day Parade which will be held in the morning around 9:00 am in the Key Stage 2 playground. In addition, we have arranged for a storyteller, Jane Grell to share several stories with the children. We would welcome any parents who would like to share their own traditional stories with the children. If you are able to do this, please can you let your child’s class teacher know.  We look forward to seeing you and your lovely children in their costumes!

Sports Competitions

We have taken part in many Sports Competitions this term - every year group will have had the opportunity to take part in competitive sport either in school or with other Waltham Forest Schools.

The Y5 and Y6 Tag Rugby team came second out of 25 schools,  the girls cricket team came 4th and so did the boys! Our KS1 football team have played against Barclay School, our Basketball team have played against Davis Lane School and we are soon to have a mini Football tournament with St Joseph's School. Watch out Beijing Olympics 2022!

Rights Respecting Day

Teaching our children about their rights and their place in the global community is a massive part of our work at Gwyn Jones. Being a Unicef Rights Respecting School is a big part of this. Last Friday, all the children celebrated their rights and helped fight for all children to have the same rights. They raised money for charities they had chosen in different ways, like recreating the distance Sonn children travel to reach water. The RRS ambassadors presented their good work in assembly. On the 14th July, our ambassadors will be working with the WE charity to find out what we can do to make their voices heard.

Science Week

Science week was a fantastic week of lots of different types of experiements! Y1 had the tricky task of getting a marble into a bubble and Y4 had to research and design a healthier diet for Henry VIII. All the children had a fantastic time, culminated with Y6 taking part in heart and lung dissections with a scientist from Cambridge University. Read the blogs for more detail.

Dyslexia Coffee Morning

Our next coffee morning topic will be dyslexia.  What it is and how we help children who have dyslexic tendencies in school. Also what you can do to help at home.

We will have Suzi from Whitefield Research and development centre to lead the discussion and answer questions, as well as our own expert, Ms Adamthwaite, who carries out our screening.
Please come (there might be cake!)
